EARTH DAY 2008: Saturday, April 26

Volunteers and interested citizens met at the Milwaukie Center to learn about pollinators, feeding wild birds, and using safe work practices when planting native species or removing invasive plants. Logan Lauvray of The Xerces Society started the event with a presentation on pollinators. Go to The Great Sunflower Project to participate in the bee study. Tonia Burns [NCPRD Natural Resources Coordinator] spoke about feeding wild birds and led one group of volunteers at the NE corner of the park to remove invasive garlic mustard. Dan Huld [environmental science teacher for the PACE Program at the Sabin Skill Center] led students planting native species along Camus Creek near the Play Area. Steve Berliner and Dick Shook transplanted about a hundred Alder tree sprouts along the west boundary of the park.
